The DeTox EQ is a totally unique pedal in that its original purpose was to cut the signal to the amp rather than boost it.
Paul Gilbert’s scheme is that he wants to run his amp flat out for his solo sounds and then turn down the volume on the guitar to clean it up. As we all know, this doesn’t work because turning down the guitar volume results in loss of highs and flabby, icky tone. So the plan here is to use the DeTox to turn down the volume, while using the 3 bands of EQ to shape the cleaner tone exactly how you want it.
Pretty good why-didn’t-I-think-of-that idea. Since, as it turns out, the box just sounds really good anyway, and people have discovered that it also makes an excellent boost pedal as well. Paul Gilbert now uses one DeTox for boost and another for cut.
